Post Eye Operation, Anesthesia causes Swelling on the Face

Continuing with the series on post operative care for eyes, today we will talk about swelling on the face after eye surgery. The swelling on the face is a result of the anesthesia given before operation. At times, patients are told to keep the face down in order to avoid dizziness. When we keep our face down for a long time, the fluid gets accumulated on the face resulting in swelling. The swelling is not harmful and does subside on the same day of operation itself.

Care is important to avoid post operative eye discomfort

Results of eye surgery depends largely on post operative care. There are many do' s and don't s which needs to be strictly followed. Many a times, patients come up with problems like grittiness or discomfort in the eyes, post surgery. This discomfort is an outcome of the surgery which is caused by stitches. In order to get relief from the discomfort, apply lubricating gel as prescribed by your surgeon 2-3 times a day.

Oozing from the dressing is a natural response of the eye, post surgery

Post eye surgery, it is often found that patients complain of some fluid oozing out from the dressing. This is completely normal and a natural response of the eye after the surgery. As a measure of precaution, clean the fluid around the dressings, and leave the dressings intact. The oozing will stop gradually after a day.

Wash your eyes with running water to avoid dry eyes

Weather is such that eyes are turning dry. We often face itching and irritation in the eyes accompanied by dryness. The best cure for this is drinking lots of fluids and washing eyes with running water. This helps in retaining the water content in our eyes. One may also try using eye drops if irritation persists. Placing Cucumber slices on your eyelids can also be helpful.


Spectacles are any day better than Lenses

There is an endless debate over which one is better Spectacles or Lenses. Though both of them perform the same function for our eyes, yet there are huge differences in terms of their upkeep and utility. While the patient generally want the lens, for the doctors spectacles are still the best choice. Spectacles are not that sensitive, relatively even if they are not that clean still, it is kind of not affecting the eyes. Then there are very low chances of eye infection. Yes, those who are conscious about their look, they still prefer lenses.

This often causes dryness and irritation in the eyes.Washing your eyes 4-5 times with portable water is the best antidote.Like in any situation,portable water has the inherent medicinal qualities to remove impurities.For any eye injury, washing eyes with portable water is the first aid. Further on if this does not help , medicated eye can also be tried

Be careful not to wear contact lenses while bursting crackers

In case you have eye problem, its better not to burst crackers. However, if you give up to the urge, then in that case, ensure that you are not wearing contact lenses while bursting crackers. Remember your lenses are extremely sensitive to heat. They can cause major irritation in the eyes if exposed to high heat for a long time.

Diwali is a festival of lights and not of sound and pollution. Bursting crackers on Diwali is celebrated as a tradition, but we forget the harmful effects that these crackers can cause. Redness in the eye can be Subconjunctival hemorrhage

There is an eye disorder known as Subconjunctival hemorrhage, in this the blood vessels under the white tissue in the eye suffers a damage. This results in redness in the eye followed by discharge. In a condition like this don't delay consulting an eye doctor.
