Eye Care in Winters

Winter brings with it a number of health problems for people with joint pain and heart problems. But did you know that our eyes also need some extra care and attention in winter? The chilly weather brings with it a lot of eye problems like dryness, haziness or burning sensation in the eyes.

Our eyes have a film known as tear film which acts as a layer helping in retaining of moisture in the eyes and keeping them wet. When cold wind blows this layer loses its wetness, consequently leading to dryness and red eyes. The best way to overcome this condition is to drink plenty of fluids.

Protect your eyes: In summers, we remember to wear sunglasses to protect eyes from direct sunrays. Similarly we should wear glasses in winters, too. In areas where it snows, it is mandatory to wear sunglasses as the glare from the ice can be very dangerous for the eyes. Besides it can act as a shield and protect the eyes from strong chilly winds.

Moisten your eyes: Use artificial tears or humidifiers to fight dryness.

For contact lens users: Winter often poses a problem for lens wearers. The reason is dryness in the eyes. When we wear lenses, our eyes gets dry, resulting in a prickling sensation in the eyes. Also, wearing lens for long hours causes pain in the eyes. So, it is advisable not to wear them for a long duration in this weather. Further it is advisable to keep the lens soft by soaking it in the solution for an appropriate amount of time. This brings relief to the eyes while wearing them in extremely cold weather. Spectacles are a better option in this weather.

Room heater timings: Avoid using room heaters for longer hours as the hot air from heater combined with the cold air outside makes our eyes dry.

Diet: Special attention should be given to your food habits in winters. It is also important to eat food in accordance to the weather. This not only helps in keeping your body fit but your eyes healthy, too.

If in case, despite all these measures, some sort of redness and puffiness develops in the eyes, make sure to visit an eye specialist immediately. Persistence of a problem for a longer duration might be a symptom of an approaching eye disease. So, a timely cure is the best solution.

Be it our eyes or any other body part, with right care we can protect them from all the health problems. Proper care and a healthy diet is the right attitude towards enjoying any weather.
