Floaters is a problem affecting a large number of elderly and which should not be ignored

Though the problem of floaters is not very common, but as a person grows old, the vitreous (a jelly like substance present in the eye) either shrink, thicken or become more fluid; which leads to formation of clumps or strands in the eyes called floaters. Uncommon it may be but it still affects sufficiently high number of elderly. In case of any such symptoms as shared before, please, don't delay meeting an eye (cornea) specialist.

If you observe dots or spots floating in your vision, they may not be your mere immagination but Floaters

Often people face dots or spots moving in their field of vision. This problem is called floaters. Floaters are basically, dark specks, strands, dots or spots that one sees in his vision specially while seeing a plain background or sky. Although, they seem to be in-front of the eye, but in reality they are opacities floating inside the eye. If you observe such floaters in your vision, it is best to visit an eye specialist.

Let air pollution cause no harm to your eyes

Burning sensation, red eyes are a direct fall out of air pollution. We can't do much about it (lot of things depend on the government). But we can always reduce the fall out. Immediately, after coming from outside wash your eyes with fresh water. Secondly, if you drive a two-wheeler and that too for long distances, then invest in a good quality eye glasses. One more thing, since you drive regularly, check with your eye specialist whether you can use certain eye drops on a regular basis without periodic check with the doctor.

Important tests that need to be done before a Corneal Transplant

Like in every surgery, in corneal transplant too, there are certain tests that a patient need to undergo before the surgery. These include blood sugar and visual potential test of eyes. In addition, ultrasound of the eye is also done to ensure that the patient is fit for the transplant procedure. Only upon these reports being ok, can a person be operated.

One Corneal Donation can light up many lives!

Do you know that Cornea is the only donatable organ of our body that can help more than one person! Our Cornea consists of few layers and during a Corneal Transplant, not all the layers are needed to be replaced. Also, the surgery is mostly performed on parts of cornea and not the complete Cornea. So, a donor of one single Cornea can help in restoring vision of around 2-3 people.

More awareness needs to be spread among masses on eye donations and how it can help in giving sights to thousands.

What is Corneal Transplant?

Cornea has a crucial role in vision. It is the first layer through which the light entering our eyes passes. But in case of severe eye problems, like whitening of cornea or scarring due to some infection or injury etc, our vision can get adversely affected. But even in this situation there is not any thing to worry as it is possible to treat such problems easily through Corneal transplant.

In this procedure, an eye surgeon replaces a portion of your Cornea with a new section from a donor. After completion of the transplant surgery, the patient recovers his vision and soon is able to live a normal healthy life. Only hindrance and a big one is to find a donor.

Many a times, our cornea, the front transparent layer of the eye, may also get affected by infection or other disease which can harm our vision severely. But, not to worry, such problems can be treated medically and if need arises, corneal transplant can help in curing the problem completely.
