Perils of Smoking

Post 50's, the chances of developing age related Macular Degeneration increases which is the the leading cause behind vision loss in elderly. But an active smoker can develop this disease 5-10 years before in comparison to a non smoker. In fact, a smoker on a probability scale, is at 2 to 3 times higher risk of developing this disease. The reason being, adverse effect of smoking on anti oxidant metabolism, which is necessary for a healthy eye film and macula.

So, please QUIT SMOKING.

Rejuvenate your eyes with these eye exercises

Working on computers continuously, can be really stressful for the eyes. But taking small breaks to rejuvenate your eyes can be really helpful. Indulge in some small eye exercises to distress your eyes like; rub your hands briskly for few seconds and keep it on your eyes; blink your eyes 10-12 times, keep your palms on your eyes and rotate it clockwise and anti clockwise 5-10 times and similarly up and down and sideways. By performing these simple eye exercises, you can avoid any kind of eye strain on your eyes.

Burning sensation in eyes is quite common in summers. Burning eyes is a result of dust particles that gets inside the eyes due to excessive dust storms. Increased temperature also adds to the woes. The best remedy to prevent burning eyes is to wear sunglasses whenever going out. After reaching home, wash your eyes with running water. If having red eyes, wash your eyes with running water instead of using eye drops on your own

The problem of red eyes is very common in summers. The reason behind it is dust, pollution and high temperature.Though, this problem stays for for some days and disappears on its own, but many people in the hurry of getting rid of this problem, use eye drops present at home. What we don't know is that using these eye drops can do more harm than good. A quick remedy to soothe red eyes is splash some tap water in your eyes 2-3 times a day.This will not only help in soothing the eyes but will also, remove the dust stuck in the eyes. Mind you, if the redness persists beyond 3 days then you must consult an eye specialist.

Our eyes being the most sensitive organ, requires protection from the harsh rays of the sun. When the sun rays falls on the eyes directly, our eyes squints (a natural response to block the glare of the sun). According to a report by WHO, 20% of cataracts detected are caused due to sun damage because of excessive exposure to UV rays. So, whenever you go out in the sun, make sure that you wear 100% UV protected sunglasses.

Simple tips for Summer Eye Care

May is here and in North India, May and June are considered as hottest months of the year. In these months we need to take special care of eyes as severe heat along with dust can take toll of them. Dry eyes, redness becomes common for those exposed to direct sunlight. Best way to overcome is double your intake of fluids. Drink plenty of nimbu-pani. Besides buy quality sunglasses (not necessarily expensive) that block UV light and has side wraps to block the sunlight. If these measures are not working, consult an eye specialist.

It is becoming so normal to see Children wearing spectacles.What is disturbing is that kind of vision people in earlier generation used to report in the age group of 35-45, are now being seen in the age group of 10-15yr.Some serious change needs to be made in the lifestyle of the children.They need to be encouraged to go out and play in the open and side by side time spent on electronic gadgets needs to be reduced.
Inn addition the diet needs to be monitored,the kids diet must have green vegetables ,milk and seasonal fruits.Junk food like cold drink,burgers,Pizza don't do any good to their health and need to be avoided as far as possible.
